Parabola
Scientifically a parabola is a symmetrical curve created from a specific relationship between a point and a line. It can be observed simply through the arc of a ball tossed in the air. A parabolic mirror has the particular quality of inverting and reflection. Parables, from the same root Greek words, act in a similar way reflecting and contrasting ideas and often inverting them.
Parables have been used in the arts for thousands of years. Their strong visual components and short, relatively simple narratives, incorporate the familiar and are filled with symbolic and complex meanings. They are to be interpreted and deciphered as they are not what is seen on the surface, this is how art often is, with paint and visually expressed work, there is more than meets the eye.
In Parabola Bethany Garvey-Williams takes these narratives and embeds them with modern day without losing their long-standing history, using a variety of materials and methods to create a visual equivalent. The visual back and forth between the contrasting elements in the work is reminiscent of the interaction between governance, legality and commonality in today’s society.
Since graduating from TU, studying a B.A. (hons) in Fine art, Bethany has been working as an artist in residence with the Abbey Church. Parabola is Bethany’s first solo exhibition
